Looking unlike any Prius we’ve seen, the popular Toyota hybrid and its range-extended Prime twin are getting fully redesigned for 2023. The new generation of Toyota's popular hybrid model and the pioneer of hybrid technology in Canada was unveiled in November at the Los Angeles Auto Show.
More power and a sleeker design for the 2023 Toyota Prius
It gets a much smoother look overall, punctuated by a front fascia with slim headlamps and almost no grille opening. The roofline has been lowered by 50 millimetres and the rear door handles have been moved to the door pillars, too, so it cuts the profile of a coupe. Power from the hybrid’s 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine has grown to 196 horsepower and AWD is standard. The Prime model, meanwhile, makes 220 hp and offers around 60 km of emission-free EV driving.
While both the Prime and Hybrid models only get the single powertrain choice, they get a variety of trims. The Prius will be available only in XLE and Limited grades, both with all-wheel drive only. For its part, the Prime is available in SE, XSE and XSE Premium trims and only in front-wheel-drive.
The Hybrid gets a permanent magnet motor in its rear axle for its AWD, but the system was developed to be new and compact so interior space is maintained. Other standard features include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, power driver’s seat and even a digital rear-view mirror. Upgrading to Limited specs adds JBL premium audio, wireless charger, heated rear seats, and a fixed glass roof.
Upgrading to that spec also provides a massive 12.3” infotainment display and access to Toyota’s latest multimedia system that provides “Hey, Toyota” voice commands for everything from your navigation instructions to your climate control, as well as a hi-def rear-view camera and can be updated through over-the-air updates.
Both models come standard with third-generation Toyota Safety Sense, providing pre-collision system, pedestrian detection, dynamic radar cruise control, lane departure alert and centering, and emergency stop feature that will determine if the driver has become too unresponsive to continue driving.
